Alison Roman Is Reportedly Pivoting (Back) to Restaurants
After a spectacular fall from grace in May, it looks Alison Roman will be continuing her career behind kitchen doors. The cookbook author and social media star was at the height of success when her disparaging comments about Chrissy Teigen and Marie Kondo opened the floodgates for criticism of cultural appropriation in her recipes and her white privilege. Now, it appears she’s rebuilding her career (somewhat) out of the spotlight, in the relative safety of upstate New York’s restaurant scene.
Joe Rosenthal, the Instagram reporter who surfaced the moldy jam controversy at Sqirl, reported on Sunday that Roman recently purchased a restaurant in Bloomville, New York called Table On Ten (Roman did not respond to my request for confirmation or comment). The restaurant has been described in Bon Appetit as a “coffee shop/pizzeria/inn/community hub” and on Google as a “tiny restaurant in an old house.”
While Roman does not follow the restaurant on Instagram, they do have nearly identical Instagram aesthetics, so it’s no surprise that Roman would be attracted to the establishment.
That’s not the only restaurant Roman is getting involved with. Brushland Eating House in Bovina, New York posted on Instagram last week that Roman would be joining them as a guest chef on November 12 and 13.
“We’ve been hanging with and cooking alongside Alison for a while now, her wit and playfulness making her one of our favorite humans both in and out of the kitchen,” the post reads. “It seemed only right that we invite her into the pod dinner lineup, to cook up a storm with the bounty of an autumnal Catskills harvest.”
Roman also stumped for Kitty’s, a newly-opened restaurant in Hudson, New York run by pal Lauren Schaefer.

This pivot to restaurants is honestly more of a homecoming for Roman, who got her start as a pastry chef for NYC’s Milk Bar followed by a part-time gig at Brooklyn’s Pies ‘n’ Thighs. She later landed her role as a recipe tester for Bon Appetit and became the popular food figure she was earlier this year. But after the Chrissy Teigen incident, the New York Times suspended Roman’s column and, despite promises to the contrary, has yet to welcome her back. The TV show Roman sold (and that Teigen said she was set to executive produce) also seems to have stalled. Plus, she gave an interview to Ziwe Fumudoh that didn’t exactly make things better for her. If there was a time to drop everything and run away to make pizza in the woods, it’s now—you know I can relate.
