Erika “Bird” Martinez, who began making cooking videos on YouTube channel “Cooking with Bird Martinez” last spring, was allegedly attacked alongside her husband Marioh by an intruder in their Santa Clarita home early Sunday morning. According to their GoFundMe, both victims were stabbed multiple times. Bird is currently in the ICU and both her arms and legs are paralyzed as a result of the attack, but an update video posted on her channnel says she has woken up and can wiggle her toes.

Bird has over 48,000 subscribers on YouTube, where she posts recipe videos for all types of cuisine, although she’s best known for her sauces and salsa. She has an active fanbase that she affectionately calls “Birdgang.”

According to the GoFundMe, Martinez’s injuries will likely leave her unable to cook. A Facebook post by husband Marioh on Monday shared on Bird’s Instagram story says they are both in stable condition, although Bird is still intubated. Their three children are safe.

The Martinez family is asking for donations to cover medical costs and the loss of income now that the injuries have put both parents out of work. They also are unable to return to their home “fear of their family’s safety.”

The L.A. County Sheriff’s Information Bureau told The Signal that a man in his 20s was arrested in connection to the attack, but the investigation is still ongoing.

Those in the YouTube community are using their platforms to raise awareness of the GoFundMe.

“I look up to her because she’s just a very honest and sweet person,” creator WhatWouldKittyDo says through tears in a video.

Creator Felly, who is behind the channel “IN THE MIDDLE OF OHIA TREES,” also posted a video, but was too emotional to speak, so instead pointed viewers to the GoFundMe link in her description.

The Santa Clarita Police Station did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
