A leaked sex tape that seems to feature influencer Jay Alvarrez has inspired a trend on TikTok. The video, which was referenced last week on Logan Paul’s Impaulsive podcast, caught people’s attention thanks to a creative use of coconut oil: A man who appears to be Alvarrez puts the oil in a kettle to heat up and then pour on his partner.

Alvarrez has not publicly commented on the video, but it was removed from PornHub, suggesting that it may have been distributed without the consent of the creators. The damage continues to be done on TikTok, though, where users are sneaking non-sexual clips of the tape into their posts and making jokes about coconut oil.

The clip clearly violates TikTok’s Community Guidelines, but like the video of a suicide that spread on TikTok in September, that does not seem to be slowing it down. And while the suicide video inspired users to step up and try to protect each other from the harmful content, the leaked sex tape has not. A sex tape distributed without the consent of the creators amounts to revenge porn, but in this case, it has inspired memes and jokes, including from big-time creators like Tana Mongeau.

The video has also popularized Missy Elliot’s “Pass That Dutch.” The song plays during the tape, and has become the defacto soundtrack for anyone on TikTok discussing it. Target employees are letting people know about their reasonably priced coconut oil, other users are creating “must bring coconut oil” memes about soliciting hookups, and some are just dancing to “Pass That Dutch” as a wink to the video.

The response to the video has been overwhelmingly positive, even celebratory, with users earnestly praising Alvarrez’s massage technique and his partner’s body hair maintenance—which might be a kind of progress, compared to the shaming that has accompanied celebrity sex tapes in the past. Still, there's no indication that the video was meant to be seen by a wide audience. PornHub may have removed it, but the discourse on TikTok alone is enough to sustain video—until the next viral trend takes its place.
