Jenna Marbles Brings Another Internet Era to an End
Jenna Marbles, real name Jenna Mourey, is making good on her promise to leave the internet. The 33-year-old YouTuber, whose career kicked off in 2010 thanks to her viral video "How to trick people into thinking you're good looking," announced back in June that she was leaving YouTube and her over 20 million subscribers, potentially “forever,” after problematic videos of hers resurfaced. The decision to leave YouTube disappointed many of her fans, who felt her apology was satisfactory and her old videos not representative of her current content. However, on Monday she and partner Julien Solomita released what they revealed to be the final episode of their podcast, Jenna & Julien, cementing Mourey’s exit for good.
Mourey left her YouTube channel after a number of videos in which had she mocked Asian people, applied dark fake tan, and slut-shamed came to light.
"All that matters was that people were offended and it hurt them," she said of the videos in her now-deleted apology. "For that, I am so unbelievably sorry."
For many fans, the Jenna & Julien podcast was the silver lining to the end of Mourey’s channel, but now that, too, is coming to a close. The podcast began in earnest on YouTube six years ago, culminating in 285 episodes, the last being their six-minute goodbye. It was also the first time Mourey had appeared on an episode in a month.
“Hello, I’m here,” Mourey says in the episode. “I haven’t been on the internet in a while.”
Explaining her decision to end the podcast, Mourey simply said that “all good things come to an end, and that’s okay.” She has not revealed what she plans to do next.
“Two of my favorite youtubers, Jenna Marbles and Julien Solomita, have ended their podcast and I... I am done with 2020,” one listener wrote. “They were my mental escape from things and people that are destroying me.”
Others are sad but understanding.
“I can’t weigh in on Jenna Marbles’ actions, it wasn’t my apology to accept,” another tweeted. “But hearing her voice after what felt like forever genuinely made me cry. Thank you Jenna and Julien for an amazing podcast, I’m going to miss it so much.”
While Mourey has not posted on Instagram since April, her account remains active, and people continue to post messages wishing her well and hoping for her return in the comments.
