Jessica Mulroney Is Back on Instagram, and It’s Messy
This week has a been a big one for the return of disgraced social media figures. On Sunday, Man Repeller founder Leandra Cohen sent her first newsletter since complaints from a former employee revealed a culture of racism at the company, and on Monday Bon Appetit drinks editor Alex Delaney returned with a 16-slide Instagram apology for past homophobic remarks and white privilege in the industry. Now, stylist and former Meghan Markle BFF Jessica Mulroney has made her comeback, wishing her twin children a happy birthday on Instagram while admitting they had witnessed her in her “worst state.”
Back in June, Mulroney had a public fallout with Sasha Exeter, whose post about influencers’ responsibility to speak up for the Black Lives Matter movement prompted Mulroney to privately message Exeter about feeling targeted for her silence. When Exeter made a video about their interaction, Mulroney publicly apologized in an Instagram comment but privately threatened Exeter with a libel lawsuit. In response, the CTV Television Network pulled Mulroney’s reality show, I Do Redo, off the air, and tabloids reported that Mulroney’s friendship with Markle had also disintegrated.
Mulroney posted an apology on Instagram on June 11, and remained silent until her Tuesday comeback.
“Happy 10th to my twin babies. My incredible family has had to witness their mom in the worst state,” she captioned a video, apparently referencing her public fall from grace. “These two boys have not left my side and gave me the will to live and work hard when everything fell apart. They deserve the best birthday 🎂. Only up from here.
Response to her return has been mixed. While some have welcomed her with open arms, others have pointed out that she had promised to instead give her “microphone to Black voices” while she was silent, a gesture that never materialized.
“How is it possible to hold you accountable if the first post in 2 months is full of likes and heart emojis by you for comments saying you didn’t do anything wrong,” one commenter wrote. “Besides that, you said you would give the microphone and your account to others so they could share their stories. In 2 months that didn't happen.”
As for Exeter, she’s currently on a wine tour in Prince Edward County, unbothered.
