What’s the Deal With Diplo and the TikTokker Living In His House?
Less than a week ago, 19-year-old TikTok creator Quenlin Blackwell casually revealed to her over four million followers that she “lives with Diplo.” Blackwell capitalized on people’s curiosity by creating a series on the app titled “Living With Diplo,” documenting things like the musician’s Peloton bike, their car ride conversations, and his antics in the studio. However, reception of this unlikely duo quickly soured due to their age difference (Diplo is 41) and allegations of past sexual misconduct surrounding the DJ.
In light of Blackwell and Diplo’s living situation, a Twitter user named @ThatsSoShellyy came forward in a thread to accuse the artist of preying on “young naive women of color” which she says included filming sexual activity without her permission and intimidating her with a private investigator.
Diplo hired a Private investigator to contact me after an argument/fight that we had with each other in attempt to scare me into not speaking out on the disgusting details I know about him— Shelly (@ThatsSoShellyy) October 26, 2020
@ThatsSoShellyy also claims that a number of other women have privately messaged her about similar experiences with Diplo.
The controversy has unearthed past comments from prominent artists like Azealia Banks and M.I.A. In a 2015 interview with Rolling Stone, M.I.A claimed Diplo “smashed [her] hotel room and broke all the furniture” when she received a record deal, and Banks alleged on her podcast in December of last year that she and Diplo had sex when she was just 17.
All the speculation prompted Blackwell to post a Twitter statement saying that she is “not being groomed” and that there is nothing romantic between them.
“Diplo and his team are my mentors in LA and they are my safety net,” she writes.
Diplo posted his own statement claiming that he is not actually living with Blackwell and that he is instead her landlord.
“Her social media is sarcastic and chaotic and I can see you can get a twisted idea but there is nothing but a friendship between us,” he writes.
OK so I rent one of my properties to @quenblackwell. And yes I use the studio that is in that building. Her social media is sarcastic and chaotic and I can see you can get a twisted idea but there is nothing but a friendship between us.— Thomas Wesley (@diplo) October 26, 2020
However, Blackwell recently uploaded a TikTok claiming she lives at the property for free, followed by a video pointing out all the articles written about her situation soundtracked by Cardi B’s “Press,” writing that she’s living her “BEST life in Diplo’s house.”
Reps for Diplo did not respond to a request for comment.
