For One Shining Moment, Sasha Obama Was a TikTok Star
Being the child of a famous actor or political figure is one key to attaining viral fame on TikTok. But it’s not an achievement Sasha Obama was looking to unlock. After a video of the social media-averse (as in, not even Instagram)19-year-old daughter of former president Barack Obama dancing to Moneybagg Yo’s “Said Sum” remix featuring DaBaby and City Girls was discovered on TikTok, it quickly went viral on Twitter. Soon after, the TikTok account @cakethatsmg removed it and all the other videos featuring Sasha.

The videos, one of which was posted as recently as four days ago, are still preserved on Twitter. The TikTok account, which appears to belong to a friend of the youngest Obama daughter, has been active since March of this year.
I thought I was tripping when I saw Sasha Obama in these but it’s definitely her, idk why they deleted them they weren’t that bad pic.twitter.com/lNVtSjwUzX— Auri✨ (@auri1014) October 25, 2020
Naturally but still disappointingly, a conservative pocket of Twitter users are attacking Sasha Obama for doing a thing untold numbers of 19-year-olds currently do: Lip-syncing a rap song on TikTok. Others, of course, have come to her defense.
“How dare Sasha Obama lip sync on TikTok instead of being like Trump’s kids and shooting endangered species and taking pictures with their corpses?” one user wrote.
“It’s half baked racism to not allow the former first daughters to experience culture & things that normal kids (young adults) do,” another pointed out.
Everyone else is simply stanning the teen for her flawless dancing and line-delivery in the videos.

While Sasha’s TikTok tenure was short lived, other children and relatives of politicians have used the fame to their advantage. Perhaps most notorious of these examples is Claudia Conway, daughter of Kellyanne Conway, who first made headlines for being vocally anti-Trump on the app and then again when she revealed via TikTok that her mother was one of many republicans who contracted Covid-19 earlier this month.
Also active on TikTok: Meena Harris. The 36-year-old niece of Kamala Harris has over 370,000 followers. She vocally supports the Biden/Harris ticket on the app, posting debate recaps and viral clips of Joe Biden and Harris that receive millions of views.
Trump is the most racist president in modern history. Period. #biden2020♬ ICE (feat. MORGENSHTERN) - Morgenshtern
But the long term success of these accounts hinges on them being overtly political. Especially in the month before an election, Sasha Obama does not have the freedom to be a normal teen free from the role her family was elected into back in 2008—at least, not for another week and a half.
